Reading Click and Clack today in my local paper I was not sure
they were giving good advice. Someone with a Volvo V70 was
concerned about their timing belt on their car that had
112K miles on it. They answered that this guy should have
replaced the belt at 105K miles. I'm not a mechanic, but it
seems like overkill. Of course, I also don't know about the
V70, but I believe it should have similar wear as most other cars.

Just curious,

Sherwin

Some cars are harder on belts than others, and of course if you have
an 'interference' engine like the Volvo 5 cylinder, you don't want it to
break. Still, assuming it was done at 50k miles, whether it was urgent
to have it done would depend on things like driving habits and age of
the belt...

I would have done it even sooner than that. If that belt breaks, the
engine is toast, a new belt is good insurance.

105, on an interference engine is to long to risk a motor.

I'm assuming that this was the second change, not the first. I know
of no interference motor with a recommended belt change interval of 105k
miles. I think it's 50k for the Volvo I-5.

Timing belt replacement for '92/'93 models with 21 mm wide belt is every 50
000 miles or 5 years.
For '94 models onwards with 23 mm wide belt it is 70 000 miles or 7 years.

The Haynes V70 Manual also says 70 000 miles or 7 years.
Volvo's VADIS says 80 000 miles or 8 years.

I changed the timing belt at 142 000 miles, I also put in a new
waterpump just in case....
It's a bit tiresome to have to change the belt again at 160 000 miles
because of a bad waterpump.

Speaking from experience with my 240, I wish that I had changed my timing
belt at 50k. It broke on a back road in Georgia on a hot day in July. Took
several hours to find a tow truck and shop that could do the work. When I
got back to the car, the kudzu had already started climbing up the wheels.

That's odd, I thought the change interval on a 240 was 75K. I've replaced
one on the side of the road before, wasn't my car, and wasn't much fun.
Don't think I'd try that on a hot day in Georgia though, ick, that's worse
than freezing one's butt off in the winter.
