I have a 1980 264 and need to replace a caliper. Is there a way to
tell which system by vin ?
If so where can this info be gotten at? The tag is missing.

Which caliper? You can visually identify them. You generally should
replace them in pairs per axle. I've also fixed them by disassembling
and cleaning out all the passages, they just bolt together.

I seem to remember that the Girling caliper had a big "G" cast into it.

a # of things have worried me about this post. first, brakes should be
replaced in pairs (except in very rare instances). my little girl has
a brain & can deal, but anything that old will "hang a louie" if the
calipers are mismatched old & new. second, year by year the 2xx series
only had one "system". there were different component suppliers, but
technically an ATE part should perform exactly the same as a Girling.
third, the VIN is many, many places on your vehicle-- it's not a
handgun, you cannot "file" off the serial #. why, don't you look where
i do, @ a piece of paper. the registration & title both have that #.
finally, i admit most brake work is idiot's work, that is why midas
exists. it is also lifesafety. given the ?s that you have asked;
maybe, you should get some hands-on help. we all learned somehow.

I am tring to match to what is in the car now, but do not find the info
to do this. If you can be a help, I thank you. If this info is in the
vin, where? How do I decode to tell if griling or not?

Good old Rockauto... I refer to them quite often:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,1704
Clicking on "More Info" brings up pictures of calipers.

From their listings, your front calipers will be Girling, then either solid or
vented rotors. The rears can be Girling or ATE.
