Thinking my Alternator was lazy I tried every thing to keep my battery charged. What did work was running another cable along side the earth cable from the Alternator to the body and a cable also from the positive battery terminal to the Alternator .Now my charge indicator is around the vertical position instead of discharge .Maybe the cables have gained resistance over the years .740 TURBO 1990 UPDATE 198 000 klms many country klms so its hardly run in .

I doubt whether the cables themselves are high resistance - more likely
the connections at the ends - particularly the earth connection to the body.

Check the ground strap or straps from the engine to the firewall these
do fail over time usually @ the rear of the valve cover

I actually used a multi meter to measure the difference .As well I used a
set of Jump Leads to make a better earth first .My Battery now seems to have
a better charge and it's winter here a very cold winter so resistance is up
..

Cable strands break , it should be visable at the terminals. Cable
itself is copper and doesnt change. Just replace the old ones if new
ones along side are better. Usualy corrrosion at the terminal ends are
what causes lack of current, clean all terminalsand where they connect
to.
