87 240DL cranks wont start until I crank for one or two minutes. This
happens every morning and then it starts OK until it sits for a few hours.

As I'm VERY low on funds I don't want to waste any cash and would like to
trouble shoot it and repair it myself.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance....

Well start with the basics, does the fuel pump run? Does it have a spark?
How's the wiring harness? Check for rotting insulation.

The car is fine once it's started. What is the easiest way to check the fuel
    pumps without replacing them?

Carbon build up the back side of the valves causes the fuel to be soaked up
during cold starts which results in long starting times. If that is the
problem a carbon blast will correct it. This involves removing the intake
manifold. A dealership will charge 2 hrs. for that job. First try Tychron
fuel additive. Add 1 bottle in a full tank. Exxon 93 octain has it in the
fuel. Once you you get it cleared up use the Exxon 93 once a month and
    should keep you carbon free.
