I have a 2001 S40. I do not have power seats, but I do have wires going
up into the padding of both the driver and front passenger seats.

Do these cars come pre-wired from the factory for heated seats? If I
bought the dash switches for the heated seats would the connectors
already be in the dash for an easy connection?

    thanks,

Normally, a standard wiring harness isfactory-installed in all cars. It simplifies
production. When I bought my 2000 S40, it didn't have fog lights, and I had them
installed without paying for new wiring.

The wires could also be for the side airbags and/or power seat mechanism,
maybe even an occupant weight sensor to detect which level of airbag
deployment to use in a crash.

Not so much the occupant weight, but the presense of an occupant, no point
in firing the airbag if nobody's in the seat.

Thanks for all your input. I do not have power seats, but it could be
for the air bags. Didn't think of that. I will have to check a littile
    more into it.

That and the seatbelt reminders. Even if the car is prewired, it won't have
wires running right up into the seat, but rather unused pins or connectors
where any seat related wiring plugs in under the carpet.
