Hi,

I need to top-up the oil in the auto gearbox of my 960 2.3 turbo, I
can't find anywhere under the bonnet to add the oil. What oil do I
need? This is my first automatic car so please excuse the dumb questions;c)

Hello
The guage and fill tube is between the oil dip stick and the fire wall, way
down there. You have to look hard to find it, but it is indeed there. I
expect you will want to use a small tube with a funnel to reach down there.
I found such a flex tube at the autoparts store designed for the purpose as
it mounts on top of a bottle of transmission fluid. It would probably be
best to ask the autoparts for the right kind of transmission fluid as there
seems to be more than one type.

Hopefully, the experts here will have more to say . . . . .

I don't know the details of whether to check only if cool, hot, etc. . .
Good Luck!

I guess Volvo never thought an owner might want to check or add trans
fluid. Look way down at the rear of the left side of the engine near
the firewall. The dipstick end is yellow plastic. It will accept a
long 3/8" extension (the male end). Turn 1/8 turn to unlock the
dipstick and withdraw it.

And check it with the engine idling. There's two sides on the dipstick, one
for cold and one for hot. Use the cold one if the car has just started and
the hot side if the engine is all warmed up.

Thanks, found the dipstick and it's low. Where do I fill it up?

The dipstick hole.

Get a long funnel as another person suggested.

Many thanks, I added a full bottle of fluid in today and it's still not
showing on the dipstick however it's now running as it should be. I
don't know what happened to the oil as there are no apparent leeks or
even a drip on the driveway.

I've seen this problem on a 240, the 960 probably uses a similar
arrangement. One of the cooling lines had cracked from fatigue where it
bolts to the underside of the chassis. It would only leak when the car was
in gear and full hydraulic pressure was present so there was no stain on the
parking spot, it was only leaking while driving.
