hi..
i saw your post on replacing the brake pads on your volvo 960. Did
you use regular pads (ie non volvo)? Are you having any squeel
problems at all?

I've been told to get genuine pads but i'm not convinced i need them.
wondered what your experience was.

Also, did you replace the rotors?

Thanks!

Third party pads and rotors work just fine. Also the Advance parts place
has a life time warranty on pads, last two sets of pads were free.

Wow, that must be a real commercial winner! Who owns it, the easter bunny?

Agreed. The only time I've ever had brake squeal in any car was when I
didn't clean the callipers, and apply Copaslip (or similar) to the
back of the pads. I never use OE pads, though some people swear by
them.

Only replace the disks (rotors) if they are beyond the wear limit.

The life time of what? The car? The driver? Surely this would only be
cost effective if they were of very, *very* poor quality pads.

I actually asked the guy at the counter and his comment was that almost no
one kept up with the paperwork and old box. I just keep the box of new pads
with the papers in the shop. Change them out, put the old pads in the box,
papers back in the box, box in the trunk and get new pads when I pass an
Advance parts store. New pads and papers then go back in the shop until I
hear the scrapping. Repeat as needed.

Lifetime of your ownership of the car but they've never asked me for ID.
Actually lasted longer than the Volvo stuff. They count on the buyer not
keeping up with the paperwork.

Amazing, they must wonder if their sales gimic really has any effect.

In fact, thinking about this, I bet it's hedged against statistical
odds. I bet a fairly low percentage of people keep a car for long
enough to have a second set of pads fitted, and almost nobody sees a
third set.
