C70 & V70 XC AWD Startup

Hi all,

Something of interest.

I have two great Volvo's, a 2000 C70 and a 2000 V70 XC, here's my
question.

When I start the C70 from cold, sometimes it will stutter for a few
seconds before idling fine. This has also happened to the V70, we have
the cars serviced at a Volvo dealership and they are well taken care
of.

What could be the problem? One thing that helped the C70, which would
sometimes stall when started from cold has been to use Premium Fuel.

Is there something else that could help? Better sparks? leads? Anybody
else have this?

You mention some interesting points of which I can answer. We have had
the cars since new, and I have had the C70 in at various Volvo
dealerships in the hunt for the dealership that you can use with some
level of comfort.

I believe I found that dealership. Although I love the Volvo product
and have owned 2 other great Volvo's, a 360GLT and the 440 Turbo, I
still understand that not everything is perfect on these cars.

For example, I'm happy to have a warranty on the C70 as it's needed it
!

But there are ways to improve the performance of a vehicle. The reason
I ask about the leads or any other component, is that I had a similar
issue with the Cadillac Seville STS (which I sold for the C70),
changing a few OEM components solved the problem.

The issue is not serious, it doesnt happen all the time and its not
bad to the point of rocking the engine, but, its not puuuuurrrrrrfect
for those few initial seconds.

It may be muck in the throttle housing, and a damaged gasket in the housing.
My C70 had the same symptoms that you have described, a visit to the local
Volvo dealer later, and relieved of £50, it is back to normal.

The throttle housing does not get checked at each service, but at (I
believe) later service intervals.

Chris,

Sounds like a plan, considering the engines in both cars are about the
same, (I think ;-)), this may be it. Will update on the progress for
any others who have this issue.

Take a look at your owners' manuals, Nick.

Both cars have, as standard, the low pressure turbo. Volvo recommends
use of premium fuel with these engines - and they certainly have no
interest in *increasing* your operating costs. Quite the contrary!

At this point, your onboard computer system may have been running those
engines with a significantly retarded ignition to have caused fouling of
the plugs. This shouldn't be the case, but one never knows. Feed them
what they're designed to consume. If nothing else, you'll find about a
5% increase in fuel mileage, which covers a good bit of the difference
in cost.

running like a charm, will have them check the C70 in a couple of
weeks.

Even with the price increases, Premium has always been the fuel we use
in both cars - although I'm still paying WAAAAY less than in the UK,
gotta feel for the drivers over there.
