Hello, I have a 2001 C70 HPT and there was a noise in the power
steering system whenever the car heated up to normal operating
temperature. It did not make any noise at start up when it was cold
and only started making noise when turning the steering wheel after the
temp guage reached the normal tempature. I took the car to a local
european auto repair shop (it is out of warranty) and they replaced the
intake line to the power steering pump, saying that there was a problem
with the hose and air was getting into the system which was causing the
power steering noise.
Well that did not really solve the problem, it wasn't as bad, but still
makes noise when the car heats up. The determined that the power
steering pump needs to be replaced. After shopping around I ordered an
aftermarket pump from A1-Cardone and had it shipped to this shop. The
pump arrived and they went to put it on, but it came without the pulley
attached. After trying numerous ways to get the pulley off of the old
pump that they were removing to attach it to the new pump, they told me
that they can't get it off.
For any Volvo mechanics who have done this... is there a special way to
get the power steering pump pulley off of the old pump (which is OEM
Volvo) and will it install to this aftermarket pump? They have used
their pulley puller and said that the pulley (which is plastic I
believe) is flexing, but not moving, and they don't want to break it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. They said that I could order a
new pulley for $100 and most Volvo parts dealers they called stated
that the Volvo C70 PS pumps come with the pulleys already attached. I
called the place that I bought the PS pump from and they have two
replacement pumps for a 2001 C70 HPT... both do not ship with the
pulley attached. So there must be a way to get this old one off or
possibly special tools other than a normal pulley puller? Please
help... my car is at the mechanics and they don't have an answer.
