S80 - 57/2007 - 2.4D Auto - Warning message problem

We have just travelled from near Paris, France to Sheffield towing a 1350kg Caravan we have had a warning light/message appear on the display stating " Engine System Service Required ! " approx 120 miles form home - the car was serviced prior to going away on 11th August 2011 at an independent (friends) garage. Is this a problem or just a reset issue, there was also a smell of burning rubber at some points in the journey...? can anyone advise.
