Well, the thing about timing belts is that if they break you just bought a
new engine. I don't follow much of the dealer recommended servicing, but I
change the timeling belt regularly.

The S80 only needs a new timing belt every 105,000 miles. Any more than that
is a waste of time and money. Just tension it correctly and you're good to
go.

Mines just snapped at 67000 miles.
Is there any chance I will get away with a new top end or will it be a new
engine and am I totally liable.

The car is currently with Volvo.

Usually the only damage is bent valves. There will be marks on the
piston tops, but they can be ignored.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.

They've told me that it could just be a sheared woodruff key somewhere and
that they are going to try a new belt tomorrow.

That was probably the accessories belt (alternator, a/c compressor, etc.),
not the timing belt! It's supposed to be replaced every 60,000 miles.
