Can anyone help me please?

I have an 02 Volvo S80 automatic and today the gearbox refused to
change from what I think is 2nd to 3rd gear. The only way around it
was to select L and get the speed up to about 35mph and then change
into D.

It point blank refused to go into 3rd when in 2, 3 or D.

Is this a sign that I have problems with the torque converter, or the
gearbox.

First thing to do is check oil level.

Greetings Niels

Hi Niels

Thanks for this, it was after changing the oil levels that the problem
occurred. The oil levels on the gearbox are OK. Any thoughts?

Thats sounds interesting, has to much oil been put on? Remember the marks
are different for cold and warm oil.
What about the oil quality, is it the correct type of oil?

Are any error codes stores?

Greetings Niels

I've talked to the guy this morning who helped me with the oil, and
think we might have come up with an answer to the reason why the fault
might be occurring.

First of all, this is the first time I have worked on my S80 Volvo -
had it for 18 months and never done anything with it! Everything has
worked perfectly, goes like a dream and is so comfortable I have
trouble getting out of it to go to bed!!

My previous Volvo 740 Estate lasted 15 years with me so I knew almost
everything about it.

The old oil was drained from the gearbox and refilled from the top
filler plug. And that was all I did. Talking with my rather more
knowledgeable friend today about your response I think we have
discovered a fundamental error in what we tried to do.

As I now understand it, in order to change the gearbox oil I need to
have the oil cooler drain plug (attached to the radiator) open and the
engine running, at the same time the filler plug on the top of the
gearbox should be open and as the old oil drains out of the bottom of
the cooler plug we should be filling the new oil in from the top.

If this is the correct procedure then I feel maybe what happened is
that we have accidentally introduced an air bubble into the gearbox
oil, and this is causing the gears to fail to select through the
torque mechanism.

I hope you follow what I am trying to describe, and that this helps to
throw a bit more light on the problem.

Cheers
David

What model gearbox is it? 4 or 5 speed ?
What type of engine?

Each gearbox has it own method for oil change.

Greetings Niels

To change you remove the upper hose on the oil cooler, start the engine and
let it run until oil with air comes out the hose.
Shut off engine and fill the same amount on as you got out. Start engine,
run 5 sec in each gear and oil comes out again.
Repeat until oil is nice and red like the new you pour on.
Put hose back on, run throught gears, shut off engine and check oil level.

What oil did you put on? Does it meet the specs for the gearbox?

Greetings Niels

Hi Neils

thanks for the instructions. I will follow them when I start to do
the change.
The oil is right for the gearbox, specs are same as Volvo demand.
I'm a bit concerned about running it in each gear whilst stationary.
I suppose for 5 seconds it won't do any harm to keep my foot hard on
the brake for that time.

Cheers
David
