My mechanic has had to put now THREE alternators in my XC70. Is this
bizarre? I'm worried about the third one since the previous two lasted
a week. It's been about a week. He's attempted to see if anything was
burning them out but found nothing. He thinks it was defective Bosch
parts, but three in a row seems ridiculous. Anyone have any thoughts?

Do you know what sort of failures... bearings or diodes? Modern alternators
put out vast amounts of current, but unlike the big 35 amp dinosaurs of the
70s they can't do that for long without cooking themselves. You don't have a
high power class A amplifier in the stereo system, I presume?

It would be highly unlikely to have three bad replacement alternators
in a row. I would be worried that he is just swapping parts and not
looking for the cause of the problem. You didn't indicate what the
symptoms were. Battery going dead rapidly, alternator light on all the
time, or??

You may want to consider finding another mechanic, preferably an
independent experienced with Volvo cars or a Volvo dealer.
