1990 740T Sedan: Wires to the ABS/Speed Sensor (Differential) keep breaking!

Help,

I don't want to buy a new ABS/Speed Sensor, the one on the differential. My
mechanic friend says he will not remove the old one to repair it properly
unless I have a new one waiting in case it breaks. Are these ABS/Speed
sensors that fragile?

Thanks,

Matt

Assuming your mechanic is honest (I didn't see where HE wanted to sell you
the part. He simply wants one to be available), then:

Rationale for having a ready-spare at hand:
- The ABS/Speed sensor in the diff is 14/15 years old, possibly making it
more fragile (plastic or rubber component perhaps?) and it may not survive
the removal.
- Even if the removal goes well, then if the ABS/Speed sensor is totally
shot, he can put the new one in and you will be on your way quicker than
waiting for a replacement to arrive.

Rationale for not having a ready-spare at hand:
- Saves the tmie and effort in finding and securing a new ABS/Speed sensor
(possibly needelessly)
- Saves the possible 15-20% restocking fee in case it is not required

It is really your decision. It might be good if you could find the ABS/Speed
sensor somewhere locally, don't buy it, but let the proprietor know that you
may need it on the day your mechanic will examine your car. That will save
you a possible restocking fee and minimize your downtime in case you end up
really needing it. And it may satisfy your mechanic that there is one
quickly available if required.

NCMan:

You said exactly what he said:
- The ABS/Speed sensor in the diff is 14/15 years old, possibly making it
more fragile (plastic or rubber component perhaps?) and it may not survive
the removal.

Hearing it twice confirms waht I have to do and also confirms my trust in my
mechanic.

Thank you.

Matt

You will need a new differential cover ,gasket & the ring that holds the
sensor in as this is most likely rusted & will spin around when he try's to
remove

Let me guess,

I have to buy these separately from the sensor because they don't come with
it and if I really want to cover myself then I better get them too.

Do you have a suggestion as to where I could get these things along with the
rear sensor. I'm in Queens, NY.

Thanks,

Matt
