2001 Monitor message of the day?

  1. We have a xc70 Volvo Wgn. It has 80k miles on it. We use Mobil 1 synthetic
consistently. Here's the problem, the computerized system tracker the same
one that shows fuel consumption and so on i.e.; burned out bulbs and so on.
The little device gives me a different tragedy of the day. Today it was
'Brake failure stop s.a.p." also yesterday ABS. Serve comes up pretty
regular. We just had new brakes, complete Service, trans oil change but
the computer keeps bringing up these dire failure reports. All of this has
continued before and after the service. Whoops Forgot about the "Emissions
    System needs Service"
This sucker is a real pessimist, Does this stuff ever stop

  2. Not specifically familiar with the XC70, but in general the "brake failure"
warning (as opposed to ABS warnings) means the system has sensed an
imbalance between the primary and secondary braking hydraulic circuits. As
you noticed, the brakes still work, but the pedal may be softer than it was.

You should take it back to the place that did the brakes. This is not likely
to be a false alarm, but an indication that something is out of whack with
    the brakes.

    Michael,

Owned may vehicles that had "Check engine" lights that were just the
computer telling me that I needed the recommended maintainence and that
there was no actual probem. (Dealers make mose $$$ this way)

I own an XC70 2002. Dealer just may need to clear the codes if you
just had that service done. I have not experience that yet at 43K but
I'm sure I will soon. Just need to find out how to clear the codes.
All my other vehicles had little tricks with the ignition key and trip
computer buttons to clear the messages.

    Good Luck

I can report of a couple of S60s (including mine) that showed an ABS
    failure msg at around 55k.
Dealer just said "... oh another one" then cleared the malfunction in 30
    secs free of charge.
