    Volvo S80, 2.9, 115K.
My automatic transmission "slips" going from 2-3 gear.
The steering column rumbles and vibrates for 1-2 seconds.
Occasionally the speed does not keep up with the engine RPMs.
My dealer wants to replace the transmission, but $$$$$$$... Thanks GM!

    Anybody have any suggestions?

  2. i would get a few opinions.....i have heard
the trannys are bad, in some cases....115k miles
is not much....you might ask about $ adjustements
from the dealer...as it is a known problem on some s80
trannys.....this is what the colorado dealer told me
when pricing my 2000 s80t6 w/196,000 on the clock....

good luck.......you may find a used one if you end up
    needing to replace....

    2.5L inline-6? Yeah that's the 4T65E Hydramatic. The 2.9L got the
    Aisin-Warner 50-42LE.

Both work better with filter change 15-20K miles. Of course Volvo (and
other makes) may tell you it's a lifetime fill (not sure in this
case). If so it's good until the end of the tranny's life. At least
    that's my interpretation.

    I would:
    1. Change the transmission filter, wipe clean the pan, inspect the
amount and types of debris in the pan
    2. Use a suitable High Mileage ATF (maybe Castrol, check specs) and
maybe a shorter drain/refill interval AGAIN shortly if the fluid is
really dirty. I wouldn't "machine flush" the system when dirty.

But if it already slips then there isn't much other than the above
that you can do. Check with Volvo for goodwill warranty like others
said. You can also check your local Automatic Transmission Rebuilders
    Assoc. for a local shop.

Check with Jaspers for a reman 4T65E along with any recommended local
installer (ATRA preferred). All decent reman should have at least a 3-
    year/100K mile warranty.

Of course, the moment you mention Volvo the price probably doubles. ;)
