740 gear selection problem

2nd gear has always (since I've had the car) been very slightly more
difficult to select then the other gears. But, recently from neutral
it can be impossible to select any gear. No grinding or crunching -
the gear shift will just not get into gear.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Either there's something wrong with your clutch actuation (cable
adjustment or hydraulic problem depending on year), or the disc sticks
to the flywheel because it's contaminated with oil or is warped. Try
starting the car in 4th gear with the clutch pedal depressed. (Make
sure nothing is in front of the car in case it lurches forward.)
