740 Switches

Discussion in 'Volvo 740' started by not hereplease, Oct 29, 2003.

  1. My heated driver seat is not working neither is the switch on the console,
the passenger seat works no problem.
I am unable to get the console off to change over the driver passenger
switch to check to see if the fault is the switch before I go about taking
the seat out. If the switch light is not working does that indicate a small
bulb gone in the switch or the switch is gone.

The console comes out fairly easily, there's just two screws, and if you
have an automatic tranny there's a clip you have to take off the separate
the halves at one end. If the switch doesn't light it's likely just the bulb
burned out, but it could be the switch, your best bet is to measure voltage
at the plug to the seat with the switch on. IIRC the switch connectors are
keyed so you can't easily swap switches.

  3. From a point at sea, to the circles of your mind, this is not
    hereplease@not here.com:
Removing the panel of the console that the switches sit in is easy
enough. Remove the ashtray and its housing as if you were getting to
the fuses. On the bottom lip of the opening is a wide clip that spans
a split in the panel and fastens it to a frame member - prise this
clip off. Now undo the two screws that are visible adjacent to the
switches. You should now be able to lift the panel away from the
console, unhooking it from the handbrake housing and splaying the
split section to get it awa\y from the gear lever. There may be a
little more to it than this if you have a manual gear box.

Not sure if the switches are interchangeable - they connect to a
couple of multiplugs that I seem to remember only go one way round. I
may be wrong, or you may be able to patch it temporarily.

The bulb could have gone or the switch failed or both. It is possible
to prise the switch open, but expect it to be full of bits you later
cannot find a purpose for when reassembling it. But it may be amenable
to cleaning. The bulbs are tiny fiddly things that are hard to source
(don't expect Halfords to have any) and have to be soldered in.

More likely that the plug has become disconnected.

    Cheers, Peter.
