After about 5 minutes of normal driving, the car cuts out and jerks, like
the fuel is being pinched. If i shut off the car and wait a minute it will
work for another five minutes before starting over again. When I opened the
hood i heard it backfiring. Could this all be a timing belt? Any other
    ideas?

  2. A timing belt failure will not give you five minutes of normal driving. If
you haven't changed the fuel filter lately this would be a good time. The
symptoms could be something else, but they are also typical for plugged fuel
    filters.

  3. Fuel filters should be changed regularly at about 70,000 miles.

A plugged exhaust system will give the same symptoms...

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)
