Few days ago my heater blower stopped working on my 93 850GLT. It was making
some rattling noise, than it stopped. It worked again a day later, then
finally stopped.

I removed knee bolster (although being a bit nervous since I saw yellow SRS
sticker warning). Then I removed glove box to get access to it, however I
was not able to take out the blower motor from the housing. There are
numerous wires ( at least 4 connectors) connected to the blower housing and
I wasn't sure if I suppose to remove those as well, to be able to replace
the blower. I was able to remove 4 screws on the blower housing but stopped
there since so much wires were on the way and was afraid of start pulling
wires from connectors on the blower housing.

Could someone please shed some light on how to get the blower motor out and
if I have to remove the wiring how to do so easily.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Dave,

I removed mine ('96 850 - right hand drive) about 3 months ago, a piece of
electrical sticky tape from the loom (presumablty) had broken loose and was
stuck on the fan blades, putting it badly out of balance. It happened all of
a sudden. The a/c evaporator had been replaced about a year or more
earlier, and may be related.

However from memory, remove the glove box and knee bolster and motor screws
like you did, then you have to remove the plug to the fan motor, and a
connector that crosses under the front of the fan housing also. Maybe more
than one. Look carefully at how they disconnect so you don't damage their
locking clips. I think that was all. Then with a lot of wiggling and
twisting it will come out. It's a close thing though. Has to be an
accident rather than good planning.

I probably disconnected the battery before doing all this. You really
wouldn't want to trigger the air bag.

I was also interested in disassembling and re-lubricating the fan motor, but
it looked like it was put together intending it never to be serviced.

regards
Barry

I did that, breaking away just enough plastic to get oil to the
bearings, and reinstalled the blower. It's been about a year, with no
problems.

Thank your for all suggestions - great posts and links.Thank you all. I am
going to try to get a used one first, just in case the existing one cannot
be fixed once I get it out.

Just wandering if there is a way to check if it is just the motor or could
be something else that triggered this. Could the codes still show something
even though check engine light never came on.

Thanks

The Check Engine will not come on for a climate control fault. You did
not state if you have ECC or manual if ECC the rec& ac lights will flash
indicating a fault code in the system if manual nothing to flash as
there is no electronic parts other than the blower motor & the blower
resistor

This part may also be interchangeable with another car's blower. When
I replaced the motor in my 760 (which looks surprisingly similar to
the 850's) I was able to find that earlier models of Chevy Cavalier
had the exact same motor, right down to the electrical connectors and
bolt-hole patterns. I was able to get a brand new one from a jobber
for about $30 (compared to the outrageous price Volvo wanted.

Once you get it out try to get as many numbers as possible off it and
start searching. I'll bet a Delco will do the trick.

Good luck,
blurp

Thanks for that suggestion, I might give it another go!

I replaced motor and resister and it still does not work. What else should I
look for?
