I have had an unfortunate experience with my 850 '94 2.5L 10 valve. At
60k the hydraulic lifters and valves were replaced. Now at 115k (55k
added) I have a complete burnt out valve requiring replacement and while
that is being done, the rest are being replaced. I wonder what has
caused this and most importantly how can this be avoided in the furure.

    Regards

  2. I have had an unfortunate experience with my 850 '94 2.5L 10 valve. At 60k
Poor engine oil or running it too long, or perhaps a bad replacement job.
    Why were they replaced?

The hydaulic lifters were making a knocking/tapping noise as half of
them were prematurely worn - the work was completed under warranty.
Very unusual and always serviced at the main dealer.
    Many thanks

  4. I had a '93 850 with 180,000 miles and have a '95 850 with 117,000 miles
and never hand any engine work. I just took it in to the dealer for all
    scheduled maintenance.

If you didn't buy it new or it was a lease car, it may have missed some
oil changes. The other thing that will do it is rough use when new, but
since Volvo engines are run in before the car is sold, that is usually
    not the case.

Why were the lifters and valves worn at 55k ??? Sounds like either a
    manurfacturing problem or insufficient maintanance??

From what I've read, there seems to be a problem on these engines with
those that never see high RPM. The valves need to slowly turn, and it
seems they don't at low RPM, and a pie shape piece burns out after a
    while.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)
