I have a standard 1993 Volvo 940 Sedan with about 166,500 miles. I've owned the car for almost 18 months, and have driven roughly 15,000 miles in that time.

Last weekend, I was driving in the #1 lane of the Hollywood Freeway at about 75 MPH when I started hearing a rustling kind of sound. I couldn't tell exactly where the source of the sound was. Rather suddenly the sound intensified and then the car stalled out. I was able to coast across 5 lanes and coast off at the next exit, parking the car on the street while waiting for a tow service to tow the car to my home. Several times I tried to re-start the car, but nothing doing. The engine would crank, and even sound like it was starting, but it would immediately stall again. It's sitting in my garage, inoperative until I can arrange a visit from a mechanic.

Any suggestions as to the cause of this malfunction? Thanks.
