940 Starter Noises and Replacement

Discussion in 'Volvo 940' started by Ernie Dinklefwait, Nov 4, 2003.

  1. I have a 1994 945TG (940 Wagon, Turbo) with about 110K miles on it.
Recently, immediately upon starting, there has been a grinding noise that
comes from the engine compartment area. The noise lasts for a few seconds,
    and only appears during startup.

My thought is that the starter is beginning to fail, probably due to a
hanging return spring. I would like to replace it before it fails completely
and leaves us stranded. Has anyone replaced their starter on a 940 turbo
engine, and is it something a typical weekend mechanic can do with regular
tools? Also, is there any recommendation on a replacement part - either from
    Volvo or an aftermarket source?

You need a long extension and a universal joint to get at the top bolt
easily (from underneath). Otherwise it's pretty easy. Just make sure
    you disconnect the battery!

And remember your radio code before you disconnect.
