98 V70 AWD Wagon

  1. Steam and smoke from the tailpipe. A little steam coming out of the
tailpipe is normal, but this is obviously not normal. Thick cumulus clouds
that actually affect the local weather. And SMOKE! I'm banned to the
non-smokers section of the neighborhood. Bad piston rings, valve seals,
head gasket? All of the above? I need to narrow it down before I bring it
in. Assuming the worst, how many $1000's should I expect to pay to get this
    fixed?

In a way I don't care how much it costs, because I have peace knowing that
once I get everything fixed on this car I will park it and never touch it
again until I sell it. I've owned many cars in my life, and this one is by
far the most unreliable money pit I've ever owned!!! Stay away from these
cars! Don't even park next to them, lest they contaminate your car with
their festering pustules of volvo-eating bacteria!!!

    Anyway, thanks for your advice...

From what you are stating it sounds like either a Faulty head gasket or
    worst case a bad head
