how do they work & are they a "must" for
performance ... or just another goodie..?

Hard to figure out exacly what you are asking. So I'll take a guess
and hope that "adj timing gears" means variable valve timing.

This will certainly enhance performance and efficiency, because static
valve timing is necessarily a compromise of conditions. The valves
control the flow of gas into and out of the combustion chambers, and
at different rates of induction and exhaustion (ie at different engine
speeds and loading) optimum flow will occur at differing valve
timings. The (early) variable systems I've seen work by altering the
relationship of the camshaft to its drive gear.

If your question also implies aftermarket fitment, then I think you'd
have your work cut out.

They let you advance or retard the camshaft timing, more or less shifting
the compromise between low end torque and high end power. They're most
useful when using an aftermarket or otherwise non-stock camshaft.

Do you mean the adjustable camshaft wheel (as sold by IPD and others) which
allows small adjustments to the timing of the valve gear? If so they have a
means of adjustment that enables the timing of the camshaft relative to the
crankcase to eliminate the errors due to production. The cam wheel is replaced
by this device and the engine is then set so that there are no errors in the
timing. This should enable the engine to run at peak efficiency as far as valve
timing goes. It does not do the same job as the Honda and Alfa Romeo variable
valve timing gear which works on two camshafts and continuously while engine is
operating. If you wish to tune your car then they are advantageous in obtaining
the best from your car's mechanical set-up.

Cheers, Peter.

thanx everyone for the info...i learned i can not use one (from IPD -
adjustable timing gear)...due to my b230 being between dates that
won't allow it...i learned the adj gear is a convenience item that
allows you to make slight changes in the effect the cam has on the
powerplant...it allows you to pick and choose where you want your
power and tourque...ie: on the high end, or on the low end...i am
going to forego it, as i installed the IPD performance cam and will
accept the "stock" settings...for solid all around performance...

Is that because of the camshaft driven distributor on the back of the head?
If so you could probably still use it, except you may have to adjust the
distributor to compensate for it. I think you'll be happy with the
performance at the stock setting though.

James...yea, stock setting is going to do me just fine...the 940t is
running smoooooth and strong right now...w/the stock vx cam
setting...i can ruun @ 14-16psi, 0 - 60 in aprox 8 dec...and i am
working on gettin the rear tyres to "break loose" and do me some blue
smoke....one project after another...thanx for the info...
