Others here will be able to understand the implications of the "G reg"
designation, but if it is fuel injected (and I have to assume that it
is being a 1990, then:

If it runs above 2000 (once you get it started), and it runs fine
above 3000RPM, then check the operation of the air control valve.

If it runs poorly (or won't run well) above about 3000 RPM, then check
the air mass meter.

Additionally, check the operation of the Throttle Sensor.

It means it's in the UK - where there's a letter in the registration number
(licence plate, to you!) which signifies the year of manufacture (or, more
accurately, the year of first registration).

This has something to do with the air idle control valve I'd guess.

I thought as much, but the OP stated that it is a 1990, and then the
"G" reg, so are those the same, or do they have any meaning as far as
his problem- specifically, how does the "G" change anything as far as
being a 1990 model??

Not really. 'G' means first registered between 1 August 1989 and 31 July
1990 - so could presumably be either 89MY or 90MY - and I guess the OP is
saying that this particular car is 90MY.

i was having a problem similiar of that with my 86 740 gle but it was just
my amm censor not connecting good but to clean out the iac valve just take
like a toothbrush and some card cleaner and sprayt it in there and it
should work great
