Thinking about buying one of these but really concerned about the
mileage - 148,000 on 1.6 engine. should i be or is there anything
specific i should be checking out? :D

I would check to make sure it has log books and evidence of regular
servicing by a qualified volvo trained/certified mechanic. If that all
checks out OK.... you'll be pretty safe.

Personnally big miles on a small engine with a relatively heavy car is not
good- the engine is working pretty hard most of the time- if its an estate
    potentially more so.

If you must have it, look for spot on maintanance with at
least-as-often-as-recommended oil changes. If so you could potentially get
around 200k from this engine before thinking about work.

The standard 1.8 is actually better on fuel than the 1.6 due to more ideal
gearing and having the torque to propel the car without labouring so much.

Avoid the 1.8 GDi, they are fraught with problems. The 2.0T coupled to the
    autobox is the best combination.

AFAIK timing belt replacement on this engine is the same as the other
modular units- 80k. So it would be no far from the 2nd belt replacement.

I would ensure the water pump, idler and tensioner rollers are replaced this
time, and the crank oil seal if its showing any signs of dampness.

Then cross your fingers and hope it goes alot longer!
