My cruise control started failing in my 1991 Volvo 740 wagon, at the
end of last summer and by midwinter it seemed fully dysfunctional. I
don't use it much since I do mostly short distance driving in the Volvo
but since the car had to get a new ....something, not sure what- to
make the windows go up and down, I asked to have the cruise checked.
The mechanic said it's not the vacuum, they don't work on cruise
control past that point since no one has ever asked for it- so she has
no data on how much it might run.
it doesn't matter a lot but cruise is a nice thing to have. I'm
wondering if anyone has any ideas- basically it started working at only
one speed last summer- generally 5 mph faster than I really wanted to
be going. :-( It sometimes took repeated pushing of the set buttons
to get even that. This persisted until this winter when it just didn't
seem to register that I was pushing any set buttons-
any easy diagnostics for a cruise control?

terrorist-like actions. We will take over TV studios, kidnap so-called
commentators & broadcast calm, well-reasoned discussions of the issues
of the day. We will not try for "balance" by hiring fruitcakes; we will
try for balance by hiring non-ideologues who have carefully thought
through the issues. " ~Jon Carroll
