Is the fuel tank the same in the saloon as the estate.
If no, is the fuel pump in the tank the same on both models.

The tanks are the same, as are the senders and pumps, for a given engine
and model year. But the senders and pumps have some changes with engine
type and year.

Mike.
I have the option of spares from a saloon mine is an estate which is the
same year and engine size so I should will be O.K for the fuel tank pump
also the external fuel pump.

Can you swap them around ? Can you swap them if you keep matching
pump, sender and tank together?

I've got ('89 estate) a dodgy fuel gauge - no idea why as yet. If I
were to fit the "wrong" sender, would this cause mis-readings ?

Believe it or not, some senders work "backwards" relative to the
others. This way the gauge reads empty when the tank is full and vice
versa. Also keep in mind that some of the non turbos have the Regina
fuel system which only has the one tank pump.
