Fitting '90-'92 740 taillights to 2-series?

I've been wondering for a while whether the '90 to '92 740 style
taillights (indicator and reverse are a stripe across the middle of
the red light) will fit on a 2-series such as a 264 that has the
6-panel lights that are the same as the earlier 7-series.

Anybody know either whether these will fit or if the body shell of
the 7-series sedans changed between '89 and '90?

The state of infrastructure in New South Wales is a disgrace.
I'm a Libran Engineer. I don't argue, I discuss.

The body did change slightly between the 89 and 90 700 series, the rear
panel went from 3 small holes where each vertical pair of bulbs went
through to one larger hole for the whole bulb cluster for the newer type
taillights. The old taillights bolt directly on to the new cars, the
old cars need the 2 bridges between the 3 small holes removed before the
new lights will fit on.

240s (and 260s) always had one big hole for the taillights, but despite
their similar appearance, 240 and 740 taillights are different enough
that they don't fit the other car. Of course any part can be made to
fit any car, all it takes is a little skill and effort. I believe that
the 740 taillight are too tall to fit between the lower edge of the
trunk lid and the bottom of the recess where the lights are mounted.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)

That is a big surprise to me, but it seems to be confirmed by various
web sites listing different lights for the two. :-(

I was told several years ago by a Volvo specialist that they were the
same...
