I have a 2000 S40 with 115,000 miles. Today while driving the check
engine light came on and the up arrow started flasing. Owner's manual
says this is a problem in the automatic gear box. The car is now
stuck in winter mode (starts in 3rd gear). Is anyone familiar with
this problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You need to go somewhere to get the code. This will tell you the reason
that the light is on. Unfortunately, this may require a trip to the
dealer, although a good independent Volvo specialist should have a tool
    capable of reading transmission codes.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)

  3. I had a similar problem w/ my 2001 S40. It turned out that the mode switch
was sticky from having soft drinks dripped on it. On the '01, the cup
holder is directly above the transmission mode switch and it didn't take
much to get it gooped up. The dealer just cleaned the switch and replaced
    it - no problems since.
