Ah! There is life on here after all, I too was wondering what was
occurring, it does look like most, if not all Volvos are working well,
    if not perfectly.
Even my own poor old '86 740 is behaving better (touching head in lieu
of wood), since changing the ignition amplifier and distributor (hall
sensor), it was intermittently refusing to start, and sometimes briefly
losing power, the suddenly absent tachometer reading gave some clue
though. At least if it recurs, I've less to troubleshoot and faff around
    with.

Thanks Ken. Good to see that at least there is one person "awake at the
    wheel".

I'm seeing that too, there has been activity on other threads, but no
new posts. I have noticed a serious decline in News Group postings in
all areas over the last few years, most people seem to use web forums
now, as many ISP don't give news servers any more. I am using a free
service but its not without problems.

I always liked NGs, you can control the downloads and how it is
displayed, (mostly) no advertising and 1 password. Now I have 1 for
    each 'forum'.

Seems the lack of support and revenue from NGs is driving people away to
free services that look pretty, with the associated advertising.

So many of the groups have been flooded with spam and sexual
advertisements or taken over by sociopaths that they have lost their
value. I use to participate daily on a coffee group, but one
particular low-life pretty much drove it into the ground, chasing off
a couple of dozen valuable individuals to the point that actual
violence was threatened. Even after numerous complaints, the
individual lost a number of accounts in succession, but he just gets
    another and starts back in.

Thankfully, this group is still active when needed.

A lot of ISPs have few users making use of the NNTP servers, there is no
monetization possible and it costs money and hassle to run the server
and have someone sysop it. ISPs mostly want you to just se a Web
browser and stop bothering them with news clients, mail clients, FTP,
etc. Happily my ISP is an exception and not only provides those old
fashioned accoutrements, I get a static IP and can run my own Web server
    if I wish.
And Web fora software is typically slow, ugly, cannot quite readily,
screws up attributions, etc. And is periodically hacked requiring all
the participants to re-register with new screen names and passwords...
There's never really been revenue from newsgroups. I think that the
vast majority of Internet users simply don't know Usenet exists- and of
course with it there is the expectation of a modicum of literacy beyond

    Dood-, U R a penies-hed LOL! !!!

which is about the limit of the writing abilities of most Web forum
users (there are exceptions, of course). If they post to Usenet they
are mocked for being clueless and idiotic, so they stick to Web fora.
    Fine by me!

I was getting Usenet from Gradwell here in the UK, and recently they
out-sourced their news server (to save money, effort, time?), and things
immediately went downhill to the point that I moved to NIN, which is OK.

    (K3wl post m8. My V40 runz gr8 2 lol.)

Most major ISP's have dropped usenet all together, it forced me to find
a free usenet service elsewhere to use. Combine that with a whole
generation that has never heard of usenet, and things like AOL and
Google Groups that allow people to participate in usenet groups whilst
believing they are in a google group don't help either. I wish I had a
dollar for each time someone posted something they wanted, then when
asked their location said "just look at my profile" not realizing that
the majority of the participants are on usenet where there is no concept
    of profiles.

In short: the world is full of idiots and AOL and Google keep making it
easier for them to get in and bug us with their inanity. Even trying to
explain that they are in a Usenet newsgroup is frequently beyond their
    comprehension.
