If your gas door, rear door windows and locks including the 5th door or
    trunk lid
lock fail to open or any combination of the above or just the fuel gauge
    acts erratic
then the REM, Rear Electronic Module has gone to sleep and will not wake up.
A complete REM reload is needed. Volvo will not pay for this if your cars is
out of the origional factory warranty.

Below is the Tech Net Note.

    NO: 37-08

    DATE: 11/15/2001

    MODEL: S60, V70, V70XC, and S80

SUBJECT: REM in Sleep mode, DTC CEM-1A5A

After the ending chassis number, the car has the

    updated Software from the factory.

    Type Model MY Plant Chassis.

    184 S80 00-01 1 116811 - 239999

    285 V70 01 1 000257 - 170999

    285 V70 01 2 000257 - 170999

    295 V70 XC 01 1 000160 - 047999

    384 S60 01 2 000148 - 092351

    DESCRIPTION:

The REM may not "wake-up" when unlocking a vehicle. When the REM is
locked-up, the REM functions will not operate. REM functions which are
affected include: REM communication, rear door central locking function,
remote trunk lid lock function, fuel lid lock function, rear wiper/washer
function, fuel gauge value. DTC CEM-1A5A will also be set.

The above listed functions will return if the REM fuse 1 is removed and
    re-installed.

NOTE: Using the remote vehicle key will allow the operator to unlock/lock
the front door and allow unlocking/locking of the trunk assembly.

    SERVICE:

If the above description is consistent with a customer complaint, Reload of
    the

complete REM system is needed. The software is updated so the REM does not

    go to sleep again.

I had exactly this with my V70 2,4T -01. After updating the software, I
have never experienced any more problems related to doors or fuel cauge
etc. It cost me a whopping 14 euro cents! (Actually Volvo Germany paid
    for that!)
