I recall reading about an owner that was experiencing his S80 sticking in
park some time ago.
I had this same thing happen to me last night with my '99 S80 T6. I was
visiting a friend and the car sat out overnight (the first time this has
ever happened, instead of in its nice, heated garage!) in subzero temps.
When I went to leave this morning I could not get the car out of park.
And yes, I had the brake depressed.
It wasn't until I turned the wheels with the steering wheel that it would
finally allow me to shift out of park.
Was it just the unusually cold temps perhaps?

I have the '00 S80 T6 and I have never experienced this problem in cold
weather. It is parked outside in temperatures below -10 celcius all winter.

However I experienced a similar problem once and I tried _everything_ to get
it out of park. It didn't matter how many times and for how long I turned
the engine off. It took me a good 15 minutes before I figured out it was
because I had the parking lights on. Is it supposed to lock into parking
gear when the parking lights are turned on?

What are the parking lights?

I don't know if it is the same light configuration in the S80 for all
countries. But here in Sweden you have the 0 (off), Park and Low/High Beams
options on the knob. In Sweden it is against the law to drive with the
fog/spoiler lights and regular headlights at the same time, so you'll you
have to turn the headlights off. And since we also have automatic headlights
in our cars, there is no point in turning the knob to 0 since it won't turn
of the lights as long as the engine is running. So I had turned on my
parking lights and forgot all about it...
