Gentlemen, I have an 850T5 estate the other day the transmission refused to
start from 1st gear through to 4th gear. When you pull away it starts off in
4th gear. Local dealer says it's the 'gear selector switch faulty or out of
position'. Fault code 313. Has anybody had experience of this and is it
possible to reposition/replace the selector switch at home under normal
    domestic conditions?
    Many thanks for any help!

Yes, I did it on mine, I partly used this site:
    http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/pnpswitch.htm
    and the factory service manual.

The hardest part was separating the switch section of the connector
from the assembly. I also made my own centering tool frrom some scrap
    plastic.

Some folks have had luck just moving the shifter rapidly from P to L
10-20 times to clean the switch contacts. I believe this is a temporary
    fix at best.

We had a similar problem that turned out to be a fault in the speedometer. I
believe it was a bad connection since the problem was resolved by taking out
    and putting back the speedometer.
