temp. guage and a/c not working

ok so my volvo decide to get hot (temp. needle spikes all the way up) with it working fine but the a/c took a dump so if i let it cool down turned it on again the needle spikes the ac blows cold air for like a sec. then just blows hot air ... any help please i got a newborn and this is our only transportation
