Mold or bacterial growth in the evaporator is common. Where it is on the
V70 I'm not sure, but it'll be down under the dash somewhere. In my 740
I was able to remove the resistor for the blower motor speed control and
spray disinfectant in there.

well good news and the other sort!
firstly Halfords have a can for £11.49 which you sit behind the passenger
seat, put aircon on recycle for 5 mins and all is better, even has a pic on
the box of a Volvo's dashboard!
secondly today I saw a similar product in Lidls for £1.49 bugger!

I used a can of oust ( http://www.oust.com/ ) , cost about 1.50 from
tesco. As you say put the aircon on it's lowest temp and recycle, spray
the oust into the car for about 30 seconds and close the door. You
may need to do this a few times but it does the job. Also cleared the
"doggy" smell from it's previous owner.

Since the AC has mold growing inside you should also have a dealer
check the car computer. Make sure that the firmware is set to have
the AC fan come on about 1 hour after use to blow out the condensation.

How long does the fan run for? I've considered building a little timer
box to accomplish that on my 740, I've had to spray lysol into the
evaporator every few years when it starts to reek like old milk.

The fan waits about 10 minutes after you shut off the car and then it
runs for about 5 minutes.

For cars experiencing problems, Volvo has a two stage "cure". They
spray an algicide first and if that doesn't solve the problem, they can
clean out the affected area and treat it. On our 850 we have had this
done a couple times. On the V70XC, the timer on the fan works perfectly.

On my S80 and V70 it waits about 1 hour then runs for 5 minutes or
so. A one hour wait makes sense because it will allow built-up frost
to melt.
