Hi,

I have a 99 V70 XC with 125K on it. Besides a power steering rack
problem and drive shaft replacement coming up, the local dealer tells
me it needs a throttle body (the thing surges when at idle.) Does
anybody have a line as to the chance of there being a rebuild
available of this part?
This car is killing me!! Not like the 87 760 and 88 740 I've owned in
the past.
I've vented to Volvo, they're useless of course.

Thanks
Pete Albert

www.bba-reman.com the problem lies that even if this
price is a lot cheaper then the dealer you still have
to have the dealer program the electronic throttle
module I know that the whole job @ the dealer runs
about $600.00 - $700.00 shop around you have nothing to
lose

I've got an 84 240DL wagon. 194k, c'mon gal! My baby. *hug*.
Throttle body desperately needs a cleaning, didnt replace the timing
belt before it snapped 4000 miles ago, about 800 overdue for an oil
change, couple fairly minor dents and paint scuffs, front break pads are
well into being on their way out, but its mine and i love her.

I know this is kind of laughable, but how unrealistic would it be to
convert it to a turbo? Just run up to Crazy Ray's junk yard with a box
of tools and start pulling apart a 740 turbo or two? Read a couple
small mod projects of the sort. Doesnt seem all that unreasonable.

To my defense, i'd keep a low boost? :-] But more seriously, not that
I need to in any respect (bought at 160k for $800), but i would like to
keep this car until its a classic. I'm relying on the fact that volvo's
are built like bricks to keep her running on boost... hell, i figure
anything that'll put up with me and my driving for 34k probably isnt
going anywhere for a long long long time.

There's no bolt in 5 speed i can replace either, is there? At least my
overdrive is working again...

I love my brick.

If you have ever looked @ where the ETM is you will see
why on the V70XC this is not a easy repair even if the
cleaning works there is no time frame on the life of
the ETM it may go another 125K Miles or it may not go
at all this is a chance you take I have done this
cleaning on many Volvos the success rate is out of
every 10 cars 7 will usually run without surging but
for the other 3 the ETM has to be replaced since he has
high mileage a cleaning may work or not as I stated he
has nothing to loose by checking the dealer price vs.
the web site I listed

From what I've heard about this, the new ETM units that gets fitted
are just as prone to fail. So maybe it's better to try cleaning first
and wait til Volvo has a working permanent solution to this, than to
fork up and risk getting a unit that fails again!?

That's why Volvo in 03 changed to a new design to
resolve this problem but for those who own 1999-2002
will have to do either task cleaning or as you say risk
it either way you will get results as for Volvo coming
out with a fix you read what they want us to do I
checked the intranet @ work there is no new information
on this subject
