have a 240 89 estate.applying the handbrake doesnt lock the wheels
solidly, there seems to be some slop ie the handbrake shoes are moving
    slightly on the back plates.
    |can anyone provide a diagtam to check all parts atre present, or this
    normal for volvos?

Handbrake on my 93 240 wagon has always been very effective at stopping the
car and keeping it stopped (ie on a hill). Not sure what you mean about
yours not locking the wheels solidly.

There seems to always be a little back and forth play in the handbrake,
so what you're experiencing is normal.

If it's bad it's probably worn torque rod bushings in back.
