my dad sent me my early christmas present. the fourth hub cap for my
`84 240 DL wagon. oh boy!

i was so excited i ran out and gave my car another wax job. i am so
impressed at the paint job on that car. sometimes i get multicolored
swirls which just dont seem to disappear no matter how much i wax, but
    they're never too painfully noticable.

what is clear coat and what does it do?

any good waxing tips? i kind of just read the back of the turtle wax
package & it all sort of worked.

  2. Here is a really good link:

    http://www.web-cars.com/detail/

This is addressed in the link...wax will not remove the swirls, you need
a good polish to take that out BEFORE you put wax on.

It keeps the paint protected and "wet" again see the link...
Turtle wax may not the best product in the world...you want to use a
    wax with Carnauba...

Clearcoat is a clear type of finish used to give a nice shine and added
protection to the paint underneath... Sometimes you can see clearcoat that
is damaged by looking for peeling and bubbling - mainly happens on the roof.

Get a circular wax applicator pad... very soft, and then get two cloths... a
soft (but not too soft) one for removal of the main excess of wax, then a
REALLY soft one for buffing. Remember... only wax the car after it has been
thoroughly washed and dried with a chamois cloth.... The paint has got to be
very clean or you will scratch it.

If you want something better then Turtle wax try products by Meguiars...
Next coat we do on our 1993 960 (with as mint as possible paint for a 10
year old daily driver with 160+ K Kms on it) and on the VW's (Mark 4 Golf's,
a 99.5 with decent paint... bought it used and it's been sitting in the sun
for 5 years, and a 2003 with spectacular red paint, we hope stays that way)
we will be trying the Tech Wax... seems to be the step up from the "Gold
Class" product we have been using with terrific results.

    Are those Meguiar's products?

My last "clean & wax" job on my 94 850 Turbo Wagon was with Meguiar's ColorX
(I think it was recommended here). It's been 4-5 months and water still
beads up nicely on the surface. It's a one-step product for lazy people but
seems to be quite good. Anyone else use it?

Yes both are Meguiars... I haven't seen this new Tech wax (not even sure its
the right name) by my dad has been going on about wating to use it on all
our cars. I use ScratchX for the clear plastic lenses on the VW's (the
Volvo's translucent lenses don't need it) and some other "X" product for
paint (might be colour ex) to correct for the road rash on the paintjob...
And the Meguiars Gold Class... It's some pricey stuff, but it's good value,
I never feel monetarily cheated by the results... I waxed my car in the
spring, put a solid 20-25K Kms on the car so far and the water is still
beading nicely... I'll put my 2nd coat of the year on maybe next weekend
before the snow and salt hits, and i'll be good till spring.

Actualy a good value is the new turtle wax, 5 US$ a tin and it holds up well
and produces a beautiful shine :)
