Hello,

I have a 1975 Volvo 244 DL, though the mechanic says it's newer, so
let's assume it's a 1976 for the sake of argument :) So, the timing
belt went on the car because the cam seized up. Swell. I'm planning
on tackling this project on my own, and was looking for some
suggestions of books to buy that would guide me through this. By the
sounds of it, it's fairly involved, so I'd really like a nice detailed
manual if possible. I have the Haynes manual, but have read in the
past that the Bentley manual is the superior choice. However, I can't
seem to find the said book for my car. So, if somebody has the book,
could they scribble down the ISBN number, or alternatively, offer
alternate book suggestions.

Thanks much,

Ville...

Timing belt? 1975 Volvo 240 US and Canada used the B20 Engine
with a timing chain. 1976-82 used the B21 egine which had a
timing belt. For your particular repair, the Bentely manual
would be helpful because it covers the B21 engine used in 83-85
turbos. Camshaft installation would be the same as on the turbo
car. Hope this helps

re: 1975+, that's exactly why the mechanic said it's newer because it
had a timing belt :) Registration says 1975, so much for good record
keeping, eh. Ok, so is there an easy way to verify the fact that the
car has a B21 engine? Or is the fact that it has the timing belt
proof enough?

Thanks!!

Go here and click on Vehicle ID. Have your VIN handy. the 4th
and 5th digits denote the engine in your car.

There's only one motor with a timing belt from back then, and they're
all fixed the same way. There is a lot more camshaft bearing area that
is needed, so you can probably get away with removing and cleaning up
the camshaft and a careful cleaning up of the offending bearing.
However, you need to determine why this happened in the first place.
The cam bearings are part of cylinder head, and are line bored with the
caps, so you can't use the caps from a different head.

P.S. And the B20 engines didn't have a timing chain, they had timing
gears, the fiber camshaft gear was one of the weakest points of that
engine.
