I have just put my second alternator in 10 months on m '88 245 (209,000
miles). I was completing a 500 mile trip last week and noticed the battery
light flickering on an off. It was the only one. I have also noticed,
especially when the turning in tight spaces (and on hot days) that it
shrieks. Kind of a loud squealing sound. In another post there was a link
to a volvoworld article about a similiar problem.

Could this be a loose belt--at least the shrieking sound? Also, could my
wiring need to be checked. A repairman said I needed a new wiring harness.
I know those are expensive and I am wary of this guy since I don't know him
well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. Yes, the squealing is possibly the slipping belt that drives the power
    steering pump.
The flickering light problem could be a loose connection between your wiring
harness and the instrument panel. You could try wiggling the connectors
    behind
the panel and/or carefully rebending the connector contacts for a more
    secure
    connection.

    Best regards,
