My 1981 244 has an idle problem. After it starts, it runs fine (about
1000 rpm) for about a minute, then begins to rev between 500 and 2100
rpm for about two minutes. After these two minutes, the car idles and
runs fine. This problem is worse in cold weather and after the car has
been sitting for more than a few hours. I heard that this problem was
common among older 240s and could not be fixed. Any ideas? Thanks

Where are you, and what fuel system do you have. Assuming you have a
motor (3 wires) controlling idle speed, then you need to clean out the
valve part of the motor, and the throttle body. If you have just a
temperature sensitive valve (2 wires), then it's probably defective, it
may be adjustable by someone with a lot of patience who knows what
they're doing.
