440 Gearbox problem

My son has a 1.7 turbo, G reg Volvo 440, which has a noisy gearbox. Is it a
DIY job to replace the gearbox and if so how long does it take approx?

replace the clutch while you're at it. It will take 5 hours minimum with
hoist etc.
