Two questions: am considering a 740/760 estate. I'm in the UK and
will be looking at something like an F/G/H reg (1989-1991).

(1) What kind of fuel economy (mpg) and performance can I expect
from, say, the 2.3 engine.
(2) What do the specs include - which is the highest and which has
the leather and aircon?

Any other comments/warnings/advice quite welcome.

Regards etc,
Richard Carter

I check exact numbers about fuel economy in f-series engines for tommorow. I
have 2,3 l Turbo and fuel economy average is 11 litres / 100 kilometres. You
can try this if it works.

Language is finnish. Moottori = engine, korimalli = chassis type, farmari =
estate.

Specs gl, gle, glt, se. Specs mean different things in different markets. In
Finland leather and AC were not included in any spec. You had to order both
as extra. Here is some information (in swedish this time). If you need
translations I help you on monday.

My 940 2.3 (not a turbo) automatic estate does 19mpg overall average, mainly
in and out of town commuting. It does 29 -30 mpg on a long run. The manual
gearbox would be better.

My 760 GLE V6 2.8 (which only came as an automatic) averages 17 mpg overall
and has done 25 mpg on a run!

Check each individual car you se for spec - the GLE has the best as far as I
know (a GLT may be similar?) but some have leather and some do not, some
have air con and some do not. I think most 9 series will have Anti Lock
Brakes (ABS) but in the 7 series it is less common - my 760 has it but my
parents' 740 GLE did not.

Go to the Volvo Owners Club website's technical discussion forum
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/dc/dcboard.php and search the old discussions
for buying information, or check the USA www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900
advice site. Generaly checks are just as other cars - look at everything
carefully, check for leaks, smoke and funny noises, check suspension
especially on cars with tow bars and look out for warped brake discs.
Research parts supply on www.eurocarparts.co.uk or other similar specialists
and find a good independant specialist garage (e.g. Sheffield and Meredith
in Leicester) if you don't do it all yourself.

Good luck - it's worth it!

Thanks for all the advice - in the end I managed to pick up an 87
360GLT for just £250... bargain methinks!
