740 woes (long)

Found out today that the headlight wiper/washers don't work. (before anyone
asks why I didn't check them when I bought it, I bought it for beer money,
pretty well sight unseen, knowing it needed some tidying up.) They still
don't work! The washers don't work because the delivery tube is not
connected to the water supply. I can't see any way of connecting it. I can
only assume that I need a "t" piece to tap into the tube that feeds the
windscreen washers. As for the electrics I will just have to work back from
the motors. As neither wiper works I assume it is a common supply/return
fault that shouldn't be too difficult to track down.

After messing about all afternoon trying to sort out the wash side, I
noticed tonight that the day running lights have stopped working. they come
on when the lights are switched on, but not with the lights switched off.
They were working this morning. I had blown a fuse, can't remember which
one, but the book listed it for day running lights. Replacing it made no
difference.

The wiring in the front is a total mess. It looks like various accessories
have been fitted, badly wired, removed and the old bits of wire just left.
I have been tidying up, removing all the unwanted wires that were clearly
not original, so I can see what I am doing to sort out the rest of it.

Taking Stewar Hargraves advice I thought I ought to check the flame trap.
Check it, I can't even find it. It's buried somewhere deep under the fuel
injection unit. I did blow through the pipe that connects onto the spigot
on the inlet manifold and it blew through OK, so can I assume it is OK. The
spigot itself is also clear. My oil filler cap sucks down onto the rocker
box when the engine is running, which I believe is a sign that this side of
things is OK.

Even with these niggles the car runs well and I am enjoying driving it.

It could be that the motors are seized due to inaction. I had 4 go on my 740
and they are both seized on my 940. They just don't get enough use to keep
them moving. If you can be bothered take them off and soak them in a light
oil for a bit. Personally I find it easier and quicker just to wipe the
lights by
hand.

Enjoy. I wish I still had my 740, the 940 just isn't the same.
