Hi all,

I have been having an intermittent starting problem which has become
persistent. In the past it would eventually start but this morning it
just wouldn't.

The car is a 1988 760GLE V6 and I'm pretty sure the starter needs
replacing but, since I'm looking to get rid of this car, a used one
will do.

Question: how many years of starters are interchangeable? I've found a
used starter locally for a 1987 V6 automatic and I just need to know
if I should buy that part.

Thanks,
blurp

I'm not sure, but starters of that vintage are usually pretty easy to repair
at home. The normal problems are burned contacts in the solenoid part and
hardened grease. Cleaning and lubricating, and filing the contacts, may get
you through many years.

I worked on one that I couldn't get apart, but it was a bit newer.
Another I removed from the car and a chunk of heavy copper winding fell
out, something tells me that one was not gonna be an easy fix!

Well I took a chance and ordered a used starter from a wrecker ($50)
and will pick it up tomorrow. If I can get the car started tonight
I'll drive it up to the garage and park it there and then pick up the
replacement tomorrow.

One concern I have is that I can't look at the existing starter to
ensure I get the right one from the wrecker. The garage I am taking it
to told me there are two different parts for the same year, a big one
and a thin one, but I suspect they are not differentiating the NA from
the Turbo models. I was careful to specify V6 GLE NOT TURBO to the
wrecker but they may not know the difference.

Either way I've ordered the part so the dice are cast. If anyone can
point me to a link showing what the starter for this model SHOULD look
like and maybe some info on where I can find it on my car I would
appreciate it very much.

Thanks again,

I think I found an image:
http://home.eol.ca/~clubshub/Bosch Starter.htm

Hopefully it will look like that. The only difference i could find in
reading online was that virtually all 4-cylinder models use the same
starter and the Diesel and the 6-cylinder use another.

Here goes nothing (or $150, depending on how you look at it)!

Hi Blurp. The 4 Cylinder and V6 models use a 1.5kW starter motor, diesels
(6) use a 2.5kW starter motor. The type number for petrol engines is Bosch
GF or DW, or a Hitachi motor may be used.

All the best, Peter.

I don't know what started the V6 used, but the 4 cylinders do have two
different sized starters and both are interchangeable.

Went for the rebuild, now it starts like a dream.

Thanks all!
