My personal thanks to those who pitched in with information on the
lambda "speedo" cable. That cable is now resting in a box of Volvo
nostalgia.

Now comes another trick to master.

I thought I could install my 240's instrument cluster, no problem.

And for the most part, almost did.

Tach works, etc. but the same speedo unit won't give up without a
struggle.

I see the fitting on the speedo's backside; it has what appears to be
a non-threaded opening surrounded by a grey pot-metal-looking, fixed,
stationary "cone" that appears to have a couple quite large threads.

I guess that device somehow connects to the speedo cable which can be
twisted/pulled tight to the speedo.

But I don't see how.

My speedo cable ends in a chrome surround, which I can push into the
non-threaded opening--but it gets no traction. Thus, the speedo gears
do not turn.

So, there it is.

Is there some sort of gizmo that MUST be on the end of my speedo cable
to twist it tight up to the speedo unit?

If so, that means my speedo cable is defective and must be replaced?

Thank you in advance for any information you may provide.

There should be a plastic threaded nut on the end of the speedo cable,
though in some cases it gets brittle and breaks off. Check though that it
didn't simply slide down the cable towards the firewall.

Ok thanks.

If it is not there.....does that mean a new cable must be obtained?

Unfortunately, unless you can devise some other method to hold the cable
to the back of the speedo, yes.

Thank you. New cable in place and working.

NOW to figure out how to install/wire up an R-Sport instrument
cluster.

Do you have any clue?

Do I have to cut the wiring harness and route each of those wires
to it's "mate" gauge?

yikes!

No if you have the right cluster, it just connects to the existing
harness. You just may need to replace the oil pressure sender.
