85 Volvo 240 Alternator

  1. Hi there,

OK so the alternator went bad in my 85 Volvo 240 GL. Went to the wrecker,
and found two 240s, an 81 and an 84. My 85 is a B230F engine, these were
both B21s. I did take the alternator from one of them, and put it into my 85,
and it seems to work fine. THere was a size difference, but upon doing some
research, discovered they are both 70 amp, and both have regulators on the
alternator. Both have the same bolt pattern and tensioning method.

Can anybody thing of any adverse effects to putting an alternator from a
    different motor onto my car?

I tested the voltage once installed, and it was at 13.6volts. When I brought
the alternator from the wrecker to the local autoparts shop, it tested good.

    Any thoughts?

    t

You can use the alternator from any 240 on any other 240, it makes no
difference. At some point in the early 80's they went to the internal
regulator rather than the one mounted on the inner fender but you can swap
either setup onto either style car. The oldest 240's and the Turbos had
wimpy 55A alternators, newer ones were 70, if you can find a 740 Turbo they
were mostly 100A which is nice if you have a bunch of added accessories.
