87 volvo 240 air intake pipe and thermostat

    It depends on your climate. if you live in a place with mild
    winters and hot summers, you're actually better off with a cold air only
    intake - the valve on the box can stick shut and 'cook' the AMM with hot
    air. If you live in a place with frigid winters, you should replace the
    assembly. If your climate is in between, try it with no preheater and
    see if it runs ok cold.

    that's pretty common. most folks don't notice, but it's easy to
    replace it with another piece of corrugated metal hose, or what i did
    because it was just the end got ragged was to put a piece of cheap
    exhaust pipe extension tubing from poop boys over the exhaust manifold
    hole and fit the hose over the other end.

    you don't have to muck with the thermostat even if you do nothing or
    plug the extra hole, it's before the filter and so on so it doesn't
    really matter if cold air comes through there or the official cold air
    intake.
